Dent broken: what to do?

Dent broken: what to do?

Dental fractures are relatively common in children but can also occur in adults. Most of the time, they are following a fall, a blow or by simple wear and tear on already treated teeth. Fortunately, they are easily repaired by the use of resins or by placing a crown, a bridge or implant.

What to do in the immediate future?

The first thing to do after the accident to recover the piece of broken tooth. This can probably be reattached. If the tooth was expelled in full, we must seize it by the crown and especially do not touch the root. In all cases, it is a living material and it should take precautions for its conservation and transportation. Best to dive into the sterile saline solution (available at pharmacies) or in a dental aid box (Dentosafe example). It is also possible to immerse it in a short time in milk (UHT), for deposit in a plastic film (e.g., a freezer bag) or to keep it in the mouth. The water and paper are avoided.

Promptly see

If the tooth is broken or if you suspect this possibility, it is imperative to consult a dentist as soon as possible. Hidden damage may exist, especially at the root and the pulp. To increase the probability of reattachment and avoid pain, the consultation is inevitable within 24 hours after the accident.

Several possible cases

The dental pulp is not reached. In some cases, the dentist can pick tooth piece retained by you. If this is not possible, he produced the replica of your missing piece with a highly resistant resin.

The dental pulp is reached. If the volume is important, he made a replica resin after the devitalized tooth. Otherwise, it will ask you a prosthetic crown.

The root is affected. The dentist has no choice: it must extract the tooth. Three options are then available to you. It may an implant, that is to say an artificial tooth root made of titanium, over which it will place a crown. It can also be a bridge, a rootless crown which bears on the two adjacent teeth. Finally, the most common and least expensive, it places a removable device held in place by hooks or by a metal plate.

In children

Any fracture of a baby tooth requires a consultation. The aim is especially to ensure that the seed of the final tooth is not achieved, which may adversely affect its growth.
If the fracture occurs on a final tooth and the dental pulp is touched, the dentist asks a temporary crown. Thereafter, when the teeth have taken their final form, a reconstruction to take place.
