The little guide of contraception

Spermicides whose reliability is very risky and high cost.

IUDs and copper IUDs: This is one of the three most effective methods of contraception with hormonal IUD (Mirena) and the implant (Nexplanon). Copper, toxic to sperm, the inactive. In addition, the presence of the IUD in the uterus attracts immune cells (white blood cells) and causes them to destroy the sperms so inactivated.

The reliability of copper IUDs is even greater than the copper surface (a wire wound around one or the three branches of IUD) is large. The most reliable are 370 mm2 copper. IUDs that cover 250 mm2 (Nova T 250, MLCu 250) should no longer be used. A copper IUD can be left in place for 5-10 years (as there is copper, it is efficient and copper takes a long time to run out).

Their effectiveness is very high: less than 1% failure rate (less than 1 pregnancy per 100 users per year).

Good to know :
The copper IUD can also be used as emergency contraception within 5 days after unprotected intercourse. Inactivated copper not only spermatozoa, but also the oocyte and the oocyte prior to implantation. It is therefore not an "abortive method" (works before there is pregnancy). From a general point of view, the IUD is not abortifacient. If it were, the women with copper IUDs have often delayed menstruation and / or early miscarriages than women not using contraception - which is not the case.
