The contraceptive pill 3rd generation demystified
The announcement of the delisting of third generation oral contraceptives in France made by the Minister of Social Affairs and Health, Ms Marisol Touraine, raises questions regarding their efficiency and dangerousness.
Why was the 3rd generation pill?
Introduced to the market in the 90s, the third generation oral contraceptive aims to reduce the side effects associated with taking an oral contraceptive, such as vaginal discharge, bleeding, headaches, mood swings and breast pain. Containing less estrogen than birth control pills called 2nd generation, 3rd generation ones were designed primarily to reduce the risk of weight gain and acne crisis. Most recent research has shown, however, that this type of oral contraceptive increase the risk of blood clots in the blood.
